SKIN MOODS: ANXIETY

Soon’s introducing Skin Moods, a blog series examining how our moods affect our skin and skin affects our moods. (It’s a chicken or the egg cycle.) We wanted to address how various inner conditions manifest in our skin and ways you may help alleviate it. Today we’re looking at how anxiety affects our skin.

Symptoms
When experiencing anxiety or panic the bodies response is often feeling “hot”. Your skin may feel inexplicably any number of ways including: skin burning like a sunburn, numb, tingley, prickly, stinging. The way each individual experiences a reaction to anxiety is different, there are many ways to describe them. Anxiety skin symptoms may even be magnified by shifting your focus to them. (Anxiety causes a skin reaction, you notice the skin reaction and feel anxious about skin, and your skin reaction continues.)

Explanation
There are many reasons your anxiety causes skin related symptoms. Anxiety activates an emergency response in your body and hormones alert the body’s senses to be on high alert for emergency readiness. You body responds with a heightened sense of touch by the nerve endings in the skin being more sensitive and reactive. An excellent protective but involuntary move.

Anxiety induced skin symptoms can be unwelcome but they aren’t harmful. The symptoms are merely indicators that you have anxiety and need to calm yourself down by relieving what is causing the emergency response. In fact, these symptoms may be helpful in pinpointing what causes you to react anxiously. When you recover from anxiety, skin symptoms subside.

One component in the connection between anxiety and health is the vagus nerve. Mental health can have a significant impact on the vagus nerve and it’s important for responding to emotional and psychological symptoms of anxiety. The vagus nerve helps connect your emotions and senses. You can stimulate your vagus nerve to relieve anxious nervous system states.

Solution
One helpful solution for stimulating the vagus nerve is the diving reflex. You may recognize this from old movies as the suggestion to “splash some cold water on your face”. Splashing cold water on your face, holding ice cubes with a short hold of your breath, placing a refrigerated cold compress (or mask) on from your lips to scalp are useful methods. The diving reflex slows your heart rate, increases blood flow to your brain, and aids in relaxing your body. In order to move the recovery process along you can practice relaxed breathing, increase rest, and (try to) relax and not worry about your anxiety symptoms.

THE SKINNY ON SKIN TEXTURE

Porcelain. Glass. Dew. Glazed Donut. Cocoa Butter. Baby Bottom. You may be familiar with these descriptors when referring to ideal skin texture. But what do you do when your skin texture is less glass and more pebble beach or dusty bumpy road? You may wonder if you are uniquely clueless or cursed when it comes to your skin texture.

Truth is, your skin’s texture can go rogue at any time and may change with season and age. In your teens, it may be acne or hormonal changes. In adulthood, it may be age or more hormonal changes. If you have moved or traveled, it may be environmental factors or unknown allergies. Whatever the cause, there are ways to improve the texture of your skin.

Exfoliate
Removing the top layers of your skin makes way for new and healthy skin cells to emerge. Chemical exfoliants are often preferable to scrub exfoliants which can cause micro tears in the skin or irritate skin, making your skin texture worse. Don’t overdo it— that is don’t exfoliate more than once a week. If you want deeper or more serious exfoliation to treat more serious texture issues such as scarring, your dermatologist can advise on chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser resurfacing options.

Sunblock
Keeping wrinkles away, avoid sun damage, and redness by using an SPF 30 or higher on your face regularly. Avoid the discoloration of scars or skin tone when you protect your face with sunscreen. Being out in the sun and the vitamin D that goes with it is absolutely beneficial for your health but maintain a balance.

Vitamin C
A powerful vitamin in fighting off all types of ailments, Vitamin C is crucial for your skin health. Not only does Vitamin C solve current skin texture issues, it helps prevent them in the future. Vitamin C is a mighty antioxidant that repairs and defends your skin from aging, environmental damage, and pigmentation.

Hydration
Keep your skin supple and soft from the outside in by incorporating the correct hydration for your skin type. The correct type of hydrating oil or lotion keeps your skin texture even and balanced by preventing moisture loss and replenishing moisture in your skin. Hydrating by drinking sufficient water is crucial in keeping skin texture, as your skin cells (and all cells) need it to function optimally.
Soon’s Masks are excellent at helping your skin retain moisture and treat dry or flaking skin to even out skin texture. Our Microhole Hydrating Face Mask effectively locks moisture back into the skin with ultra hydrating hyaluronic acid, plumping collagen, and brightening niacinamide. While your skin texture may never resemble a pristine lake (whose is really?) it will be smoother and more radiant.

Like angst and popularity, acne was supposed to be a relic of adolescence. You anticipated acne would resolve itself right after your age lost the teen suffix. So what’s the deal with it hanging around well past then?

Whether you know it or not, adult acne is real and extremely common. Even if you never had acne in your teen years, it can start in adulthood. (Even more so if you are a woman, hooray.) Knowing the causes of adult acne is the first step to understanding why it occurs and how best to prevent and treat it.

Hormones
With adult acne, hormones are often the culprit. Particularly for women. Menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause, menopause, and going on or off birth control often affects the skin due to an imbalance of hormones.

Genetics
Like hair color or body type, research suggests that if members of your family had adult acne, you are more susceptible to it as well. No you can’t get around genetics, but dermatologists can prescribe treatments to help.

Products
Skincare and hair products may contribute to adult acne. Verify your products are non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic, and oil free. If so, it’s possible you may be allergic to an ingredient. Our bodies are constantly changing it’s possible to develop an allergy even if you had no prior history.

Medication
Various medications have side effects that contribute to adult acne. Check side effects of your medications or ingredients they contain to narrow down or rule out if this is a cause.

Diet
“You are what you eat” isn’t completely true however, what you eat can cause adult acne. Foods with a high glycemic index produce excess insulin (ie packaged foods) and hormone heavy foods (dairy or meats) contribute excess hormones, which may prevent your chances of clearer skin.

Environment
All types of pollution, smoke, dirt, chemicals in the air increase the risk of adult acne. Varying temperatures can cause your skin to produce more sweat or oil to compensate, increasing chances of clogged pores.

Stress
A lack of chill in your life might earn you adult acne. Anytime you have a looming deadline or complication and start to feel stressed, your body releases cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone that increases inflammation and oil production in your skin.
Of the many potential contributors to adult acne, one factor that’s always involved in breakouts is inflammation. While it’s not a prescription for your condition, to diminish swelling and redness Soon’s Biocellulose Firming Face Mask can help. Purslane has regenerative effects on the cellular level and is rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. White mulberry, fig, and pomegranate have anti-inflammatory benefits and gingko promotes elimination of surface cells for a renewed texture and fresh faced complexion.

We’re optimistic. We have a cheerful outlook and try not to let the little things keep us down. So why doesn’t it show in our faces? We don’t mean RBF, we mean dull skin. Of course we aren’t dull but sometimes our skin is. When skin becomes dull, how do we brighten up? Read the top reasons for dull skin and how Soon can liven your skin.

Dead Skin
As skin ages, the ability for skin to turn over new cells decreases and build up of dead skin cells increases. The result is a loss of that glow. Regenerate and rejuvenate with Soon’s Biocellulose Anti-Aging Face Mask

Pollution
Pollution can disrupt the skin barrier, cause inflammation, and create free radical damage. As free radicals in your skin break down so does the ability to fight against environmental stressors. Fortify your skin against damage with Soon’s Biocellulose Firming Face Mask.

Stress
When you are overworked or overtired, your skin checks out. Without the proper time to repair and regenerate itself, skin becomes flat and drab. Give it a boost with Soon’s Micro-hole Hydrogel Collagen Face Mask.

Hydration
Skin needs adequate hydration to be plump and buoyant. A lack of hydration may be due to insufficient moisture from skin products, the environment, the weather, or not drinking enough water. Satiate your skin’s thirst with Soon’s Micro-hole Hydrogel Hydrating Face Mask.
Hormones
Hormones can fluctuate based on age (puberty or menopause), health (new medication), and life changes (pregnancy, congrats!) The skin’s surface may get oilier or experience hyperpigmentation. Even it out with Soon’s Biocellulose Brightening Face Mask.

SKINOSCOPES: PISCES

We know how people get curious with horoscopes, so we’re having some fun and bringing you Skinoscopes, where we recommend Soon skin care based on your astrological sign.

Today is the beginning of Pisces season (February 19-March 20) so we’re diving deep to learn about these mysterious fish.

Pisces Profile = Compassionate, Artistic, Intuitive
Strengths: Intuitive, compassionate, artistic, gentle, wise, musical.
Weakness: Can be a victim or martyr, fearful, overly trusting, sad, desire to escape reality.
Likes: Spiritual themes, time alone, visual media, time to sleep, romance, music, swimming.
Dislikes: Know-it-alls, the past coming back to haunt, being criticized, cruelty of any kind.
Best Environment: On or near water, especially the sea. The movie theater.
Charismatic Marks: Soft, sometimes frail to medium build. Face easily shows emotion.

Pisces is the most vulnerable and mutable of the signs, their depth of identification with the whole inhibits the possibility of personal protection (maybe a lil co-dependent). "Understanding" is an appropriate word for this gentle, affectionate sign. Easygoing and generally accepting of others, Pisceans are often in the company of a variety of different personalities. Their willingness to give of themselves emotionally lends to an air of quiet empathy. A Pisces is comforting to be around. Though not likely to be the leader, this sign's presence is strong and vibrant in any cause they put their hearts into. Pisces are world saviors intent on bringing love and healing to the lost or struggling.

Soon Recommends: Pisces inability to hide emotion in their faces and constant expressiveness means they could benefit from our Biocellulose Firming Face Mask.

DON’T GET MAD GET EVEN

Perfect, poreless, even skin without a blemish, wrinkle, or scar is the stuff of fairy tales, filters, and photoshop. So unless you are a child or J Lo, uneven skin tone is common. Still, simply because uneven skin is common doesn’t mean an Insta feed full of flawless faces isn't frustrating and that you won’t look for every available option for evening it out. We’re taking a look at how uneven skin happens and strategies to treat it.

How Uneven Skin Happens
There are a few main culprits for uneven skin and figuring out why is the first step to correctly treating it. Uneven skin is brought about by age, sun exposure, hormones, and medications resulting in some form of hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation is irregular darkening of the skin due to overproduction of melanin. There are a few different types of hyperpigmentation:

Photoaging - Aging is a normal consequence of the body but photoaging is a result of overexposure to UV light. Damage occurs in the form of little brown spots as a result of too much melanin being produced.

Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation - Better known as acne scars, it’s skin darkening due to skin injury (like a burn) or lesions.

Melasma- Change in pigmentation due to fluctuations in hormone activity. Melanocyte cells create a gathering of melanin in the skin from medication (such as birth control), reaction to cosmetics, or pregnancy.

How to Treat Uneven Skin
There are various solutions for uneven skin which depend on the cause and also the severity. Best to start with treatments on the mild end and only seek a more intense solution if no results.
Sunscreen- Clearly. Obviously. Use SPF 30 or higher daily.

Vitamin C - Antioxidant rich Vitamin C skincare protects against free radical damage.

Exfoliation- Remove, dry, dull surface skin cells, bring out the healthier skin underneath.

Acid- Sounds severe but many over the counter products with glycolic acid, salicylic acid,  and kojic acid remove surface skin cells (aka exfoliate) and reveal the new healthy skin underneath.

Hydroquinone - This skin bleaching cream that can help lighten dark spots on the skin, evening out the skin tone. Find it in skincare products and prescription versions from a dermatologist.

Chemical Peels- Penetrate the skin to exfoliate and peel the top layers to refresh skin.

Micro dermabrasion- Thickens collagen in your skin and removes the thicker outer layer a new layer of skin.

Lasers - consider only when all else has failed. Lighten skin and sun spots and flatten scars. However, even then lasers may not be ideal for your skin type, so check with a dermatologist.
Soon offers a non-irritating way to help uneven skin, our Biocellulose Brightening Face Mask is an excellent integration in your skincare arsenal. WIth arbutin to slow the production of melanin, niacinamide to brighten dull patches, and hyaluronic acid to hydrate and plump, the Biocellulose Brightening Face Mask helps your skin stay healthy and get even.
